Into Deep Water

Hi COTC Family,

M. Scott Peck wrote about the transition from “pseudo-community” to “ true community.” For Peck pseudo-community is simply a necessary stage in human relationships; that stage at which a group cannot wade into the deeper waters of more intimate relationship and conversation. As we move toward true community, we might even feel nostalgic for an early stage of a less-intimate relationship. Those waters are easier to navigate, but maturity and true intimacy are found in the deeper waters.

There are a few opportunities to wade into the deeper waters of our shared life in Christ that I want to highlight:

First, on Sunday, November 5th, we’ll be celebrating new life in Christ in the sacrament of baptism. Jesus invites us to pass through the waters of baptism and enter into new life in and with him. If you’re interested in learning more for yourself or a child of yours, please email Sarah

Second, beginning this Sunday, we’re offering our COTC Essentials class. This is an opportunity to learn more about our community's animating convictions, vision, and values. Lunch and childcare are available. You can sign up here. As a part of our membership process, this class is a step into deeper belonging with the COTC community.

Third, ongoing Neighborhood Groups and one-off events such as the Parish Retreat (October 28th) or next week's Prayer and Worship Night present opportunities to experience greater communion with the church and with God. I hope you can check them out!

There are also two diocesan events you should be aware of:

First, on September 9th, Brian Wallace, a friend of our community and a particular support to me over the past years, was named Suffragan (Assistant) Bishop for our diocese. Bishop Brian will be serving alongside Bishop Todd, helping with clergy care and the development of diocesan systems. You’ll notice Brian’s name added to the “Prayers of the People” in the weeks ahead, and we’re grateful to have him here in Austin.

Second, our own Sarah Smith was named co-dean of C4SO’s Texas Deanery. Alongside our current dean, Cliff Warner at Christ Church, Sarah will help to support, encourage, and lead the clergy in the state. Sarah is well qualified for this role and I’m excited for how her wisdom and care will help to build up the church. Please pray for Sarah in this role!

In Christ,

Peter+
