Share the Table
The TV show “The Bear” is having a moment. In its second season the show, streaming on Hulu, has become something of a phenomenon, recapped on various podcasts and the subject of a variety of think pieces. One of the themes of the show is the important role of food in community and relationship. Around the table characters who are often at odds share in something together that is bigger than themselves.
Christians above all should have an appreciation for this theme. Our lives are oriented toward receiving from God together at his table. Each week, in the Eucharist, what theologian Sam Wells has described as the “most important moment in our lives,” we rehearse the truths of the Gospel. We recall how Jesus gave himself for us, providing in His body and blood the victory over evil and death, the forgiveness of sin, that we require and long after. By the Holy Spirit we trust that God’s grace is made present to us in this act.
One of the primary lenses through which we can understand communion is that of divine hospitality. At great cost to himself the Triune God has made room for us. By his sacrificial love we have a place with him, and together as one body, share in his provision. This is the defining reality of our life together, and our life in the world.
Our own tables and meals can be seen as an extension of and participation in this divine hospitality. By God’s grace we receive his good gifts from creation (this is why we pray thanksgiving before our meals). As we are generously received by Jesus we joyfully make space for others, enjoying together the grace and goodness of God. This is why breaking bread with others is such a wonderful way to foster reconciliation and life together across differences. This aspect of grace in our meals is captured in part by the depiction of meals and food in The Bear.
One small way we have sought to live out these truths in our shared life at COTC has been through periodic opportunities to “Share the Table.” This year this will take place on July 23rd. You can see details below and register here. Basically, this involves signing up for a shared meal with others from COTC, either as a host or participant. You’ll then receive an invite to a specific gathering or, as a host, receive a list of people who will be coming. The host will then send out instructions regarding what to bring for the shared meal, etc. On the 23rd we’ll then gather in homes throughout Austin to share a meal, as an expression of the grace we enjoy in Christ together, and simply as a way to get to know one another better. I hope you can join in on this simple expression of God’s hospitality and grace.
Welcomed in Christ with you,
Peter+
PS. Tonight at 7:00 there will be a time of evening prayer and extended worship at the church. Join us for this time of gathering in God’s presence together! All ages are welcome.
PPS.. Thanks to everyone who completed our survey over these past weeks. We’ll be sharing a summary of the results in next weeks’ enews.
