J- Terms

  • Church of the Cross 8140 Exchange Drive Austin, TX, 78754 United States (map)

We are becoming a people transformed into the image of Christ. A J-Term (or January-Term) provides space for us to engage areas where we long to see God’s transformation. For 4 weeks, we’ll gather Thursday evenings at the church building where topical groups will meet from 7-8:15PM, and then join together to pray Compline in the sanctuary. Because J-Terms represent more of a “sprint” in our life together, there are expectations of weekly readings and a commitment to be present.

Register HERE. Details of each course are below, including any special notes! Childcare will not be provided.

Speaking of Jesus*
Led by Rev. Herb Bailey
We long for the people in our lives to know Jesus, but often struggle with how to broach the topic in ways that enable transformation rather than end the conversation. Join Herb as we consider what it looks like to proclaim Jesus in our time and place.

*Note: This class will not meet on 1/11, and will have an additional Saturday class on 2/4.

Shalom & Justice
Led by Rachel Hayes
Enlisting resources from Arrabon (founded by David Bailey, our retreat speaker), explore God's vision for shalom as we survey Scripture from Genesis to Israel's first kings. See more here: https://arrabon.com/a-people-a-place-and-a-just-society/

"Join or Die"*
Led by Mark Lopez
Community engagement in America is in decline. Here we'll examine a documentary about Robert Putnam (author of Bowling Alone), his research on Social Capital, and what it means for our increasingly isolated society. We will discuss what being in community looks like today, what the Bible has to say about it, and implications for our congregation/the Church as a whole. Check out the trailer here: https://putnamdoc.com/

*Note: This class will begin at 6:30PM on 1/18 to provide time to watch the documentary in its entirety.

Conflict
Led by Rev. Sarah Smith
Conflict is a part of our everyday lives. Join us as we read Difficult Conversations, study Scripture, and consider how we might be more fruitful and less fearful in conflict.
