Traveling Light

Are you free? In many ways we live in a culture that is obsessed with freedom. The promise of increased freedom is always before us. We pursue freedom through what we purchase, through our work, through technology, through politics. At the same time, most of us would probably say that our lives are not free, we feel constrained, trapped, and anxious in some many ways. We desire to be free, but in many ways feel we are not. 
 
This past Sunday we began looking at the book of Galatians. I am excited to delve into this book together over the coming weeks! This letter, written nearly 2000 years ago, has a lot to say about freedom. One of Paul’s points is that entering into the Christian story, following in faith after Jesus, brings true freedom. This freedom is different from what we might expect, it is not the freedom we so often pursue, it is something we have to grow in, but it is true freedom, rooted in the one who is Truth. In John chapter 8 Jesus tells his disciples “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Jesus promises, that following Him and listening to Him, is the way to freedom.
 
As we explore Paul’s “letter of freedom” my prayer is that we would all grow together in the unburdened, light and truly free life of Jesus. That we would be freed from anxieties, from shame, from over-burdening ourselves, and freed to follow Christ, love and serve Him and others, freed to live the good, beautiful and true lives we all desire.
