Collects and All the Things

Hi y'all and happy rainy Friday!

If you're newer to Anglicanism, which is true for many at COTC, the word "Collect," may be a new term for you. In our Anglican context, the term Collect (KOL-ekt) means "a prayer meant to gather the intentions of the people and the focus of worship into a succinct prayer." You can read more about Collects in this short piece from Anglican Compass.

Each Sunday in our worship service, we pray the Collect for Purity, as well as the Collect of the Day. Praying the day's Collect is one of my favorite rhythms and this week I came across a helpful reminder from one of my favorite theologians, Fleming Rutledge. Her post read, "As a lifelong Episcopalian in my 9th decade, I am only now beginning to realize how powerful the Collects are in Ordinary Time. We are losing the ability to pray this way-- brief but profound, personal yet corporate, biblical, and theological." So for today, I want to leave y'all with this word from the Rev Fleming Rutledge and today's Collect in Ordinary Time.

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, you have given your only Son tone for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an exampled of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

Looking forward to worshiping with y'all on Sunday and praying the Collects together,
Kimberly+
