This Holy Week, as we journey with Jesus to the cross, we will focus on the theme of love of God. This command is, of course, found in Matthew 25, the passage we focused on for love of neighbor, but it is also found in other places in scripture and each week in our liturgy; it’s stated in the summary of the law– “Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ says: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and Prophets.”
The season of Lent and the journey to Easter remind us of God’s deep love for us and our deep need for Him. Practices of Lent, such as prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and so on, draw us closer to the love of God. In repentance, though, we are truly turning ourselves away from sin and darkness and toward the very face of God– the God who loves us and the God whom we love.
This week, as we focus on love of God, we will immerse ourselves in the practices of Lent in preparation for Good Friday and the celebration of Easter.
